Events, Talks, ISS, Astronauts in Belfast, Universe x 10, Astrophotos, MUCH more

Hi all,

1. "aroundNorth" returns to Northern Ireland
In March last year, Robert Jarvis together with the Armagh Observatory launched the first permanent installation of Robert's "aroundNorth" sonic-art installation (see http://star.arm.ac.uk/press/2015/aroundNorth.html and links therein). The installation plays a coded sound of the visible stars and those within some 150 light years of Earth, as they rotate around the North Celestial
Pole, a point in the sky that lies close to the pole star, Polaris. See https://aroundnorth.wordpress.com for more information.
Robert has brought a portable version of the installation back to Northern Ireland this week, and performances will be given from 6.00pm on Saturday 15th October in the evocative Neolithic site of the Beaghmore Stone Circles, roughly halfway between Cookstown and Omagh (see
http://www.midulstercouncil.org/Things-To-Do/What-s-On/Dark-Sky-Around-North
This performance, which is supported by Armagh Observatory and Planetarium
and the host organization, is free and everyone is welcome and very much
encouraged to attend.

2. IAA Public Lecture Meeting, 19 October;   Dr Morgan Fraser, Cambridge University / UCD: "Gaia: Mapping the Milky Way and Beyond from Space": GAIA is possibly the biggest development in astrophysics since the start of this millennium! This is a ,lecture not to be missed!
Abstract: Gaia is the European Space Agency's flagship mission for this decade, and is revolutionising our understanding of the Milky Way and beyond, by allowing astronomers to measure distances to a billion stars.
I will outline the Gaia mission, and some of the technology that makes this possible. As the first public Gaia data release was made in September 2016, I will highlight some of the key science results to
date, and discuss some of the things to look forward to from Gaia in the future. Finally, I will talk about the Gaia Alerts project, which uses Gaia data to find transients, and how amateur astronomers are getting
involved.
7.30 p.m., Bell Lecture Theatre, Physics Building, QUB.

Free admission, including light refreshments. Free parking on QUB campus after 5.30 p.m. http://irishastro.org.uk/lecture

There are no Komodo Dragons on the Galapagos Islands! Never were, almost certainly never will be! They are found on, surprise surprise, the island of Komodo in Indonesia, on the opposite side of the Pacific Ocean! I saw them there on the eclipse trip to Indonesia in March, and they are indeed fearsome beasts!
